So far, 2,650 individuals have contributed to the study, which aims to address the rising number of undiagnosed sleep disorders, including sleep apnoea and insomnia. The research team is aiming to recruit an additional 2,400 participants to meet their goal of 5,000.
Dr. Murphie noted that up to 80 percent of sleep apnoea cases go undiagnosed, with 10-15 percent of those additionally suffering from insomnia. She emphasized the importance of this public study, which currently operates without funding and includes contributors from an international panel of experts in sleep medicine.
Concerns are growing over the prevalence of undiagnosed sleep disorders. Dr. Murphie stated that sleep apnoea can lead to serious consequences such as daytime fatigue, diminished quality of life, cardiovascular issues, and other health complications—often without individuals realizing their condition. Insomnia also affects millions, contributing to decreased well-being and productivity, along with an increase in healthcare usage.
The AWAKE Check study aims to identify at-risk individuals through a quick, online screening tool that provides immediate feedback on potential sleep disorder risks. The study targets individuals who:
- Snore regularly
- Experience excessive daytime tiredness
- Frequently wake during the night
- Have concerns about their sleep quality
- Wish to better understand their risk of sleep apnoea or insomnia
