The study compared a sucrose-free low-fat diet with a sucrose-containing control diet among two groups of mice over 16 weeks. Researchers assessed glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, circulating metabolic hormones, the gut microbiome, and levels of inflammation in the colon and liver.

Mice on the sucrose-free diet showed impaired glucose control, insulin resistance, gut microbial imbalance, intestinal inflammation, and liver changes, despite no significant difference in body weight compared to the control group.

Ahmad emphasized that the complete removal of sucrose from a low-fat diet could adversely affect gut microbiota and overall metabolic health. This research uncovers the potential risks associated with restrictive diets that eliminate sugar.

He mentioned that these findings could shape future dietary guidelines by highlighting the need to maintain a healthy gut microbiome rather than solely focusing on sugar reduction. In the long run, the results could enhance strategies for preventing and managing metabolic disorders, fatty liver disease, and chronic inflammation.
