Northern Illinois Recovery Center Launches New PHP and IOP Programs for Teens

The programs were developed in response to the growing need for tailored care addressing substance abuse and mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and PTSD. NIRC identified that many adolescents require a higher level of support than typical outpatient services can provide, without needing to be entirely removed from their home and educational contexts.

Dr. Caitlyn McClure, Vice President of Clinical Services at NIRC, stated, "Too often, kids don't receive help until they're in crisis. I wanted to build IOP and PHP programs that change that trajectory by offering intensive, clinically meaningful care while keeping kids connected to their families and broader support networks."

The IOP program is designed around regular school hours to ensure that treatment does not disrupt educational attendance, while the PHP program offers additional structured support for teens needing further clinical care. Participants in the PHP program engage with certified educators during dedicated coursework times, coordinating with their schools to align assignments and track academic progress.

Weekly programming themes focus on areas such as identity, emotional regulation, and relationships to provide a comprehensive therapeutic experience. By integrating intensive treatment with opportunities to remain involved in their communities and educational settings, NIRC's teenage programs aim to equip teens with healthier coping skills and promote sustainable recovery pathways.

Dr. McClure expressed hope that these initiatives would allow teens to thrive in their everyday environments, stating, "I hope that these programs give kids the chance to genuinely flourish in environments where their real life actually happens."
