Biles revealed that symptoms from seborrheic dermatitis and eczema led to itching, visible discomfort, and uncertainty, which ultimately impacted her sleep, confidence, and mental health. She emphasized the importance of seeking professional help rather than self-diagnosing. “I was silently suffering with it for a couple of years,” Biles said.

Dermatologists note that chronic inflammatory skin conditions can present differently among individuals, making accurate diagnosis crucial. Biles experienced delays in understanding her symptoms. “Going on so many sites, trying to explain what I think I’m going through or online browsing and self-diagnosing… that just wasn’t the case,” she remarked.

Dr. Angela Lamb, a dermatologist, explained that while both conditions are common, they have distinct characteristics: one leads to flakes, while the other can cause flare-ups followed by improvement. “We don’t know of a root cause. We know that both of these are triggered by some inflammatory process,” Lamb stated.

The American Academy of Dermatology has reported that conditions like these can lead to anxiety, depression, isolation, and sleep disturbances due to pain and flare-ups. Biles acknowledged the emotional strain, saying, “I was always worried about it. So that kind of took a toll.”

Experts emphasize that the impact of physical conditions is not merely psychological. Addressing both the physical and emotional aspects is essential. Fortunately, effective treatment options are available. “It’s really about seeing a physician, having them evaluate their skin and select the best treatment for you,” Dr. Lamb said.

Biles has found relief through proper medical guidance, stating, “I felt relief immediately, and I was like, oh, thank God, and there is a treatment for me. I don’t have to keep suffering.”

Individuals facing similar challenges should consult their healthcare provider, as addressing both physical symptoms and emotional impacts are crucial for comprehensive care.
