While traditional pediatric guidelines emphasize the importance of total sleep hours, this research highlights that the regularity of sleep is equally vital for optimal cognitive development. Children who exhibited greater individual variability in sleep midpoint and higher social jet lag demonstrated lower scores in receptive vocabulary. Additionally, children with irregular sleep patterns experienced declines in visuospatial memory performance linked to high variability in sleep midpoint and social jet lag.
Interestingly, the study revealed that a child's executive attention did not show any significant association with sleep variability, suggesting that irregular sleep affects specific cognitive functions rather than causing a broad deficit.
On average, children in the study experienced a sleep duration fluctuation of approximately 60 minutes and a sleep midpoint variation of about 32 minutes. The research utilized data from 379 preschool-age children, with a mean age of 4.3 years, collected through actigraphy.
Lead author Karolina Rusin, a graduate student from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, noted, "Children with more irregular sleep patterns tended to perform worse on verbal and memory tasks, even after accounting for total sleep time. These findings reinforce evidence that sleep regularity, not just duration, plays an important role in healthy child development."
This study will be presented at the SLEEP 2026 annual meeting and has been funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health. The findings raise important questions about how irregular sleep schedules affect cognitive health and emphasize the need for further research in this area.
