Cheryl Eno, the league's vice president, noted that the juried craft show originated in the late 1960s, initiated by the wives of McHenry Hospital physicians, now known as Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital. Eno explained, "As the group grew, they decided that the mental health needs in McHenry County were significant enough to put their focus on the mental health resources."
Originally named Fair Diddley, the event was rebranded to Fall Diddley around 1986, resulting in two craft shows being held each year. However, the spring event was discontinued prior to the COVID-19 pandemic due to insufficient funding to support multiple agencies.
According to Eno, some vendors have participated for over 30 years, attracting dedicated customers who queue for the chance to purchase unique crafts.
The event will donate net proceeds from ticket sales, vendor fees, and other contributions to 13 mental health organizations in McHenry County. The volunteer league has contributed over $7 million to local mental health services throughout its history.
This year's 41st annual Fall Diddley is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, at the McHenry County Fairgrounds in Woodstock. Vendors will offer a variety of handmade items, including food, jewelry, and clothing.
