ProVeg International is emphasizing the necessity for nutritional guidance as the popularity of GLP-1 medications influences consumer food choices.

A recent PwC study revealed that 54% of GLP-1 users have increased their protein intake, while 51% are consuming more nutrient-dense foods. Conversely, 70% of these individuals reported decreased spending on snacks and sweets.

Despite the reduced appetite associated with these medications, ProVeg cautions that better nutrition is not guaranteed. The organization plans to present its GLP-1 Nutrition Guide, initially published in June, to a UK audience through a dedicated webinar scheduled for later this month.

This guide offers practical, plant-forward advice on nutrition, focusing on protein, fiber, hydration, and essential micronutrients, along with strategies to support muscle preservation.

The webinar, titled "Bridging the GLP-1 Nutrition Guidance Gap: The Keystone to Patient Success," will be held online on October 14 from 7 PM to 8 PM BST. It is hosted by MyNutriWeb and supported by ProVeg International.

Anna-Lena Klapp, head of research at ProVeg International, who will be speaking at the webinar, noted that while GLP-1 medications are transforming weight management in the UK, reduced appetite alone does not equate to improved nutrition. She stressed the importance of providing practical, evidence-based support to maintain diet quality and long-term health.

ProVeg also suggested that food manufacturers and retailers should expand their focus beyond just protein in product development. They highlighted the roles of fiber, micronutrient fortification, and protein diversity in addressing the needs of those on GLP-1 medications. Legumes, whole grains, and fortified plant proteins could be instrumental in creating smaller, nutritionally balanced meals, while affordability and clear nutritional information remain critical for product innovation.

The webinar will feature insights from Soraya Pineda, a weight management dietitian with over 14 years of NHS experience, and will be chaired by Tanya Haffner, registered dietitian and CEO of MyNutriWeb.
