A recent study has found a link between the use of popular weight-loss medications, including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound, and the development of Wernicke encephalopathy, a rare and serious brain condition. This neurological disorder results from a severe deficiency of vitamin B1, or thiamine.

Researchers reported 15 cases of Wernicke encephalopathy among individuals taking GLP-1 medications containing semaglutide and tirzepatide, with cases documented in 2023 and 2024. Vitamin B1 is crucial for proper nerve function, and a deficiency can lead to symptoms such as confusion, balance issues, and abnormal eye movements. Left untreated, the condition can result in permanent brain damage or even death, making it a medical emergency.
The appetite-suppressing effects of GLP-1 drugs may contribute to vitamin deficiencies by reducing food intake, particularly foods rich in vitamin B1 like pork, fish, and whole grains. Many of the patients who developed the disorder also experienced severe vomiting, loss of appetite, poor nutrition, or rapid weight loss.
While Wernicke encephalopathy remains rare, researchers emphasize the importance of educating patients about these risks and monitoring for early warning signs.
