Mental Health Challenges in Las Vegas Entertainment Industry

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Over 10% of Nevada's workforce is employed in the hospitality or entertainment sectors, where experts warn that the demands of these professions can lead to significant mental health challenges. DJ Uch, a performer in Las Vegas for years, shared his experience: "Sometimes I feel pressure to always be perfect. I’m a lifer in entertainment. I thought the pandemic meant the end for me, with almost everything closing down."

Job uncertainty is a common issue for entertainers like DJ Uch, whose next paycheck is often not guaranteed. He noted, "It’s been stressful for a lot of people I know that work in entertainment. Some are reporting shows at only 30% capacity, while attendance used to be a highlight for visitors to Vegas." Las Vegas tourism has not yet rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, impacting various shows and venues. Recent closures of Cirque du Soleil’s Mad Apple and Awakening have raised further concerns regarding the future of live performances.

Reflecting on his own struggles, DJ Uch mentioned, "I remember a time when industry pressures overwhelmed me. I’m now 71 months and about three weeks sober from drugs and alcohol, which is nearly six years." Experts indicate that entertainers frequently face rejection, public scrutiny, creative burnout, and job insecurity, making them particularly vulnerable to mental health issues. Dr. Julie Robinson, a psychologist, emphasized the importance of recognizing signs of distress: "If someone you care about is acting differently, it’s essential to check in with them directly. Ask, 'Are you okay? How can I support you?'"

DJ Uch concluded by underscoring the necessity of proactive mental health care: "If you don’t take action when it comes to your emotional health, it could manifest negatively at the worst time."
