For decades, research has highlighted a strong link between sleep issues and depression, often showing that insomnia can increase the likelihood of depression and vice versa. An article in Current Psychiatry Reports indicates that individuals suffering from insomnia are five times more prone to experiencing anxiety or depressive symptoms compared to those without sleep troubles.
William Vaughn McCall, MD, a professor emeritus at MCG and principal investigator for the AIMS Trial, stated that the goal is to discover new methods for reducing the risk of developing depression and alleviating its symptoms. MCG's research team, in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh and the University of California, Los Angeles, is investigating this connection further.
In a prior study conducted in 2019, McCall's team examined the effects of zolpidem, a sleep aid commonly known as Ambien, on patients with insomnia and depression. Their findings indicated a reduction in insomnia, depression, and suicidal thoughts among participants. Following this work, various research groups sought to explore non-pharmaceutical approaches, prompting the current trial.
The AIMS Trial will focus on psychotherapy as a method for addressing sleep and depression issues. This study shifts from pharmacological treatments to psychotherapeutic strategies, using conversations with trained mental health professionals to help patients modify negative patterns and behaviors.
Among the approaches being studied, Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia (CBTI) will be utilized, alongside other sleep-focused psychotherapies. Savannah Makowski, the site therapist, emphasized that the treatment involves an eight-week structured protocol designed to develop specific skills related to sleep management.
The AIMS Trial aims to enroll 140 participants throughout its duration. The research team is currently recruiting patients aged 55 and older who are diagnosed with depression and are on antidepressant medications but still experience active symptoms. Participants can either take part in-person at MCG’s psychiatry department or join remotely.
Laryssa McCloud, PhD, research manager at MCG, expressed excitement about securing the grant. The trial's setup has begun, with 14 participants already enrolled and ongoing recruitment efforts underway.
Participants will undergo an eight-week intervention followed by five months of follow-up evaluations. McCall noted that while the study will span five years, patient involvement will vary as individuals enter and exit the study over time. The researchers are optimistic about establishing partnerships to extend treatment opportunities through this research.
