Neighbors near a West Side bar in San Antonio expressed distress and frustration following a police shooting incident on Friday night. Authorities reported that a man, who had a concealed shotgun in a duffel bag, was confronted by police near Ruiz Street and North San Marcos. Video footage obtained by News 4 San Antonio captured the moments as officers repeatedly instructed the man to drop the weapon. He could be heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me, kill me now," before he allegedly pointed the firearm at police. Residents described the violent scene as surprising yet not unfamiliar. Julia Reyes, a local resident, noted the recurring nature of such incidents, stating, "It’s just really horrifying that it’s so prevalent around here in the 78207 area." Earlier this month, a man had died near the Kozy Korner bar, having appeared to be electrocuted after climbing an electrical tower and falling. "Something about that little crossroads, it’s always kind of something," Reyes remarked.
While police have not confirmed if the man was experiencing a mental health crisis, neighbors voiced concerns regarding mental health issues and homelessness in the area. Reyes emphasized the need for more outreach and resources. In response to these issues, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) held a mental health walk the following day, attended by SAPD officers. Lauren Byrd, Executive Director of NAMI Greater San Antonio, stated that resources are available for families needing assistance.
Additionally, the city has a Crisis Response and Reform unit established in 2008 to enhance police responses to individuals experiencing mental health crises. News 4 San Antonio has inquired whether members of this specialized unit were involved in Friday’s event and is awaiting a response. Nonprofits, such as Corazón Ministries, have also highlighted the need for more long-term treatment facilities to provide adequate care for individuals in crisis.
