Shan, who is in the final year of a dual degree program in nutrition, biology, and psychology, has actively participated in research and public service since transferring to Sargent College his sophomore year. He has contributed to the Nutrition program through UROP research, clubs, and leadership roles.

His presentation is titled “Dietary Fiber and Cardiometabolic and Gut-Related Outcomes in Children: A Systematic Review and Metanalysis.” This research investigates the effects of various isolated fiber types on health parameters such as cholesterol, blood sugar, and gut health metrics. Shan aims to address the lack of fiber research focused on children and hopes his findings will inform future health recommendations.

In addition to his research, Shan works in Dr. Nicola McKeown’s Diet Quality & Healthy Aging Lab, where he has spent two semesters focusing on dietary fiber screening technology, eventually aspiring to develop it into a mobile app. He is also the president of BU's Nutrition and Dietetics Club and serves as a program manager for BU’s Student Food Rescue, which connects students through community service initiatives.

Lukas Shan will present his research at the conference alongside graduate student researcher Emma Frank.
