Hope Haney, executive director of NAMI Mahoning Valley, emphasized the importance of recognizing that mental illnesses are as common as physical health conditions, stating, "You do know someone in your family or in the people around you who has mental illness... But it's a normal thing. Like people get diabetes, people have asthma. Those are medical issues, and so is mental health."
The event not only showcased available resources in the valley but also aimed to create a judgment-free environment for discussing mental health. Judge Renee Disalvo highlighted the significance of acknowledging mental health issues before they escalate into more serious situations. She explained that many individuals may not initially recognize their need for help, underscoring the necessity of awareness and acknowledgment as the first steps toward seeking assistance.
