According to TAL’s Understanding Modern Australia Report, over 70% of Australians engage in activities to support their mental health, though maintaining social connections often takes a back seat. Glenn Baird, Head of Mental Health at TAL, emphasized the importance of integrating time with friends and family into one’s routine for improved wellbeing, suggesting simple gestures like phone calls or brief meetups can foster connections.
In a separate analysis of social habits, TAL found that 37% of Australians cited tiredness as the primary reason for canceling plans. Additionally, 35% opted out due to a lack of desire to go out, while 26% preferred solitude. Financial concerns also played a role, with 20% stating cancellations were due to costs.
The survey revealed notable differences between genders, as 45% of women named fatigue as a reason for canceling, compared to 28% of men. Convenience also affected participation; 54% of respondents found being close to home encouraged attendance, while 47% preferred events scheduled at convenient times.
Baird advised that social invitations should be straightforward to increase the likelihood of attendance. He suggested that opting for local meetups at suitable times could reduce the effort involved.
The survey further indicated that close friends are a crucial source of emotional support for enhancing mood, with 45% turning to friends compared to 42% to partners and 41% to family. Women were more likely to seek support from friends, with 50% highlighting this preference. The importance of friendships varied by age, with 61% of 18- to 24-year-olds relying on friends for mood enhancement, while older adults identified partners and family as primary support sources.
Baird noted that maintaining regular social contact is linked to better health outcomes. In recognition of Mental Health Month, TAL is promoting social connection through initiatives like providing free tickets to AFLW games for Australians to attend with loved ones.
TAL is also broadening its approach to mental health support, focusing on prevention, early intervention, recovery, and care, while enhancing its services to meet the needs of Australians experiencing mental health challenges. Practical suggestions for maintaining social connections include manageable invitations, regular check-ins, and combining social activities with daily tasks.
