
A large study involving nearly 100,000 participants has revealed that the quality of sleep, in addition to its duration, affects the likelihood of developing numerous diseases later in life. Prior research has already indicated that getting six to eight hours of sleep daily can reduce the risk for various health issues, including diabetes and heart disease. To address this gap, researchers from Peking University in China analyzed data from 95,559 people in the UK Biobank, which collects biological, genetic, and lifestyle information from 500,000 volunteer participants in the UK. Participants wore wrist accelerometers for seven consecutive days and nights to gather accurate sleep data.
The study examined the duration of different sleep stages—REM, deep sleep, and light sleep—while also considering total sleep time, wakefulness after sleep onset, and variations in sleep patterns night-to-night. Each participant was monitored for an average of nine years, and their health records were checked for correlations with over 1,000 potential health conditions.
Results indicated that increased REM sleep was associated with a reduced risk of 83 diseases, including heart failure, dementia, and Parkinson's disease. Conversely, more deep sleep correlated with a lower risk of seven different conditions, such as type 2 diabetes and clinical depression. On the other hand, higher levels of sleep irregularity and wakefulness after sleep onset were linked to increased risks of anxiety and substance use disorders.
Participants who consistently slept for six to eight hours demonstrated the lowest risk for many diseases. In contrast, those sleeping less than five hours exhibited heightened vulnerability for 37 health conditions, while those sleeping more than eight hours also faced potential risks.
The researchers highlighted that the optimal sleep duration for minimizing disease risk was particularly focused within the six to eight hour range. They acknowledged that the study's observational nature prevents them from confirming direct causation between sleep patterns and disease risks.
The findings support the notion that maintaining a sleep duration of six to eight hours may act as a protective factor for middle-aged and older adults, likely due to more favorable distributions of sleep stages. This research offers new insights into health promotion and preventive strategies.
