
A recent study published online on April 22 in Neurology has established a link between optimal sleep duration and improved executive function, particularly among individuals with focal epilepsy. The research, led by Xin You Tai, D.Phil., from the University of Oxford, analyzed data from the U.K. Biobank cohort, involving 482,207 participants aged 38 to 72 who were free of dementia at the start of the study. The findings indicated that participants across control, focal epilepsy, and stroke groups who achieved optimal sleep duration of six to eight hours displayed better executive function. Notably, those with focal epilepsy showed a significantly greater benefit from optimal sleep compared to healthy controls, a trend not observed in stroke patients. Additionally, individuals with nonoptimal sleep exhibited worse executive function, with negative effects noted up to eight years before the diagnosis of focal epilepsy.
In terms of dementia risk, individuals with focal epilepsy who experienced nonoptimal sleep had a markedly higher likelihood of developing dementia compared to healthy controls with optimal sleep, exhibiting a hazard ratio of 5.15. Conversely, the risk for stroke patients with poor sleep was lower, with a hazard ratio of 3.48. The study highlighted that optimal versus nonoptimal sleep significantly influenced dementia risk in patients with focal epilepsy while showing no significant impact within the stroke group.
Tai emphasized that the results suggest that achieving optimal sleep may offer particular cognitive benefits and reduce dementia risk for those with focal epilepsy. Several authors of the study have disclosed financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry.
