Dr. Casey Jo Cottrill from the Barbour Community Health Association has been recognized as the 2026 Early Career Citizen Psychologist by the West Virginia Psychological Association. She received the award on September 19 during the association's annual conference, which attracts professionals from various mental health fields across the state.

The honor reflects her significant contributions to integrating behavioral health care in rural schools and enhancing support systems for children and families. The award aims to acknowledge individuals whose efforts advance the association's mission of improving access to mental health care and fostering public understanding of psychology.
A graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, Cottrill became a member of the association in 2022. She was appointed as the director of school-based health for the Barbour Community Health Association in December. Her initiatives focus on improving accessibility to behavioral health services for students. She established and led a quality improvement subcommittee dedicated to data-driven strategies for school-based health centers. To remove barriers to care, Cottrill revised consent forms to align with available services and implemented a virtual platform to simplify the consent process for families. Additionally, she has trained school personnel and students in various mental health areas.
“Rural school-based health is uniquely challenging, but is also a source for meaningful, values-driven work,” Cottrill noted. “I’m especially proud that this award provides an opportunity to shine a light on the impact of school-based health and the difference it can make for our communities.”
Eric Ruf, the chief executive officer of the Barbour Community Health Association, praised Cottrill's leadership, stating, “Her dedication has strengthened behavioral health access for children and families across Barbour County.”
In addition to her clinical role, Cottrill is involved with the Barbour County Bright Futures Coalition and mentors third-year Marshall University students at a practicum site.
