Families, mental health professionals, and community organizations convened at Zorinsky Lake Park in Omaha, Nebraska, on Saturday for The Climb, an annual event aimed at increasing awareness of maternal and perinatal mental health. Meghan Luebbert, chair of The Climb and a psychiatric nurse practitioner, emphasized that the event is inclusive, welcoming mothers, fathers, children, family members, friends, and mental health providers.
Organizers also addressed the difficulties Nebraska families face in accessing specialized mental health care. Emily Goodman, founder of the Nebraska chapter and the current education co-chair, noted that around 24,000 babies are born in the state each year. Of those, 232 professionals have obtained specialized certification through Postpartum Support International, including approximately 135 behavioral health providers.
Goodman pointed out the lack of a formalized or standardized referral system in Nebraska for individuals requiring further treatment following a mental health screening.
The Climb serves as the Nebraska chapter's largest fundraising event, with organizers highlighting that ongoing participation and fundraising efforts are essential for enhancing mental health education, screening, and resources for families throughout the state.
