The survey reveals that many attorneys struggle with the pressures of their profession, which can stem from the emotional toll of working with clients in distress, the stigma associated with seeking help, and the relentless pursuit of billable hours.
Diana Uchiyama, the executive director of ILAP, noted that the findings are alarming. She stated that 20% of respondents classified their health as poor or fair, and among them, one-third reported experiencing suicidal ideation. Additionally, 24% stated they considered taking their own lives within the two weeks leading up to the survey.
Uchiyama encourages attorneys to seek help, emphasizing that taking that step is a courageous act. "Getting help is the biggest sign of courage and bravery that you can do for yourself," she said. "You diminish the shame that you feel about yourself and what you perceive as your inadequacies." Further resources are available on the ILAP website.
