Suspect Charged in Stabbing of Jaquoya Wix Raises Concerns About Mental Health System

At a press conference on Wednesday at Detroit Police Department headquarters, Alicya Wix, Jaquoya’s sister, expressed gratitude to the community for their support during this difficult time and highlighted the profound impact of her sister’s loss. "Jaquoya was deeply loved just as she loved others. She was a mother, a daughter, a sister, a wife, a friend, a coworker and her loss leaves a hole in our hearts that can never be filled," she said.

Watson's actions have raised questions regarding Wayne County’s mental health system. Court documents indicate that a nurse filed a petition on July 3 for Watson's commitment to a psychiatric hospital after he exhibited psychotic behavior following a disturbance at a coffee shop. Though the petition was granted on July 13 and Watson was admitted for treatment, concerns have emerged because the required follow-up on his compliance with an outpatient treatment plan was not conducted, as the necessary forms were never filed. This oversight potentially hindered the court's ability to monitor his progress.

James E. White, CEO of the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network, confirmed that an internal review of the practices related to this case would be initiated. However, specifics about Watson's background and the case's details were not disclosed by officials.

Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison acknowledged the challenges presented by the case, noting, "There are some incidents that are difficult even for those of us who have spent our careers in law enforcement to comprehend, and this is one of them." He also announced plans for increased police presence in downtown areas, focusing on vulnerable locations.
