MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - On Thursday, students, faculty, and community members gathered at Northern Michigan University for the 3rd annual Mind over Miles 5k, which drew around 300 participants. The event is held in honor of World Mental Health Day, taking place on Saturday, and aims to foster community connections while reducing the stigma surrounding mental health support.

Jessica Corkin, the Mind over Miles Director, emphasized the importance of linking physical activity to positive mental health and wellbeing. The race involved more than 60 volunteers, including members from the NMU Women’s Wrestling Program, who assisted in cleanup efforts. Wrestler Cameron Maldonado expressed her appreciation for being part of an event that highlights mental health importance, stating the necessity of self-check-ins for overall wellbeing.
Angie Stebbins, Assistant Vice President of Holistic Wellbeing, noted that volunteering can be one of the most effective ways to enhance one’s own mental health. She explained that contributing to the community not only benefits others but boosts one’s own sense of wellbeing. Maldonado echoed this sentiment, sharing how her team actively seeks out opportunities to volunteer and support the community. She mentioned that this collective effort encourages her to step outside her comfort zone and give her best.
Stebbins affirmed that NMU offers numerous resources aimed at supporting students in various aspects of their wellbeing.
