A study led by Professor Hiroaki Kanouchi from Osaka Metropolitan University’s Graduate School of Human Life and Ecology focused on the impact of vitamin deficiencies, particularly folate (B9) and vitamin B12, on fatigue and motivation. These vitamins help regulate homocysteine (Hcy), a blood marker that tends to increase when levels of these nutrients are insufficient.
The study examined approximately 600 healthy Japanese adults. Researchers measured blood levels of homocysteine, folate, and vitamin B12, and evaluated fatigue and motivation through the Chalder Fatigue Scale and a Visual Analog Scale.
Findings indicated that participants with elevated homocysteine levels had lower folate and vitamin B12 levels, regardless of gender. Further analysis revealed that higher homocysteine levels correlated with greater physical fatigue in men, while in women, it was linked to decreased motivation.
Professor Kanouchi noted, "This suggested relationship between vitamin B12, folate, and fatigue in healthy individuals may represent the first report of its kind. Blood homocysteine levels are traditionally seen as a concern for cardiovascular disease, dementia, and fractures. However, our findings indicate that fatigue and motivation should also be considered. To avoid increased homocysteine levels, preventing deficiencies in vitamin B12 and folate is crucial. Maintaining a well-balanced diet daily is essential."
