MedUni Vienna officially launched its Master’s program in Psychotherapy today, welcoming its first cohort of students during a ceremony in the Jugendstilhörsaal. Stephan Doering, Head of the program and Director of its Curriculum, emphasized that all future psychotherapists will need to complete this dedicated academic degree. "They will acquire broad knowledge and skills in the scientific research of their discipline," he stated at a press conference held by the Austrian Federal Association for Psychotherapy (ÖBVP).
The Master's program spans four semesters and awards 120 ECTS credits. It accommodates 40 students for this joint initiative. The curriculum integrates fundamental aspects of psychotherapy, psychology, and medicine while emphasizing practical skills. Courses will cover topics such as mental disorders, diagnostics, psychotherapeutic methods, and psychotherapy research, complemented by placements in psychiatric care and related institutions.
According to the newly established Psychotherapy Act 2024, this Master's program is the second stage in a structured training pathway, following relevant prior education. After completing the Master's, graduates will undertake several years of specialist psychotherapeutic training with recognized professional associations to deepen their expertise in specific psychotherapeutic methods.
