The randomized, placebo-controlled trial, spearheaded by Dr. Jeremy Swisher, a sports medicine physician at UCLA, assessed Magtein, ThreoTech's branded magnesium L-threonate, over four weeks among college athletes. The initial findings were presented as a poster at the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) Annual Meeting in April 2026, with full results expected to be published in a peer-reviewed journal later this year.

This research is part of a wider clinical program investigating magnesium L-threonate, which has previously looked into outcomes such as cognition and sleep. A randomized controlled trial from 2024 indicated improvements in sleep quality and daytime functioning in adults with self-reported sleep issues.

According to ThreoTech, five peer-reviewed, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies on Magtein have been published in the United States, China, and Australia.

The UCLA study specifically investigates magnesium L-threonate's impact on sleep, recovery, athletic performance, and heart rate variability in healthy adults aged 18-35. The trial commenced in October 2025.

This research marks ThreoTech’s foray into sports nutrition applications for Magtein. The company serves as the exclusive global ingredient supplier and patent licensee for magnesium L-threonate, promoted as a research-driven ingredient beneficial for brain health. Magtein has also obtained EU novel food and UK authorization, expanding its use in dietary supplements in these regions.

ThreoTech plans to discuss the UCLA research at a breakfast briefing during SupplySide Global on October 28 and will showcase at Booth 5652. Dr. Rafea Naffa, Director of R&D at ThreoTech, expressed enthusiasm regarding Magtein's potential benefits for sports nutrition, stating that they are pleased that new research is focusing on its advantages for athletes.
