Portland, Oregon, has been identified as the top city for vegans, credited for its organic farms and a large number of community gardens and farmers’ markets. The city boasts the third-highest number of highly rated, affordable vegan-friendly restaurants, with residents opting for meatless meals 148 percent more often than the national average.
Los Angeles follows closely in second place, offering a wealth of fresh, organic food options alongside numerous vegan culinary events and festivals, including Vegan Street Fair and activities at Besties Vegan Paradise.
Austin, Texas, comes in third, noted for its surprisingly low prices on vegetarian food and a significant number of affordable restaurants with vegan choices.
This ranking gains relevance as the price of meat in the US has risen by 12 percent compared to the previous year. Some politicians, traditionally critical of vegan diets, have begun advocating for plant-based alternatives as a cost-effective measure. Chip Lupo, an analyst for WalletHub, remarked that shifts towards vegetarian and vegan diets may occur as meat prices continue to soar.
Experts suggest that plant-based diets can often be more economical. Tanya M. Halliday, an associate professor at the University of Utah, advocated for strategic shopping practices to further reduce grocery bills.
