A study by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis has revealed that socioeconomic factors significantly influence brain development in children. The study analyzed data from nearly 12,000 children aged 9 to 10, focusing on how various environmental, health, and daily activity factors relate to brain structure and function. Researchers highlighted that a family's financial situation and the resources available in a child’s neighborhood had the strongest correlation with brain development.

Senior author Nico U. Dosenbach, MD, PhD, noted that the socioeconomic impact on brain development is profound, stating, “For the first time at this scale, we showed that socioeconomic conditions leave the deepest imprint of any factor we looked at.” The research suggests that socioeconomic disadvantages may indirectly affect brain health through issues like poor sleep and chronic stress.

The findings, published in the journal Science on June 11, involved an extensive analysis of 649 different variables categorized into socioeconomic factors, health, screen time, and more. Of the top 40 variables linked to brain function, 37 were socioeconomic. Strong influences identified included family income, housing conditions, poverty rates, and access to transportation.

Scott A. Marek, PhD, the first author, emphasized the overwhelming significance of socioeconomic opportunity, stating, “It just dwarfed everything else.” The research indicated that socioeconomic variables primarily shape the areas of the brain related to sensory and motor functions, rather than directly affecting cognitive regions.

The study also aimed to address misconceptions regarding the relationship between brain physiology and IQ. By controlling for socioeconomic status, researchers found that many supposed correlations between IQ scores and brain features diminished significantly. In fact, analyzing only children from high socioeconomic backgrounds showed no correlation between IQ and brain structure or function.

Dosenbach and Marek concluded that environmental factors, rather than inherent neurobiological attributes, shape children’s brain development. They pointed out the potential for interventions that improve sleep and reduce stress among children in lower socioeconomic settings to enhance brain health.
