Chanda Flynn, system director of Behavioral Health at Spartanburg Medical Center, guided a media tour of the facility, showcasing nurse stations and quiet areas intended for patient relaxation. The unit employs a team of technicians, recreational therapists, and social workers who collaborate with patients and their families.

The new unit is equipped with private rooms, a dining area, and therapeutic spaces, all aimed at fostering recovery. Each room features writable walls for patients to express their thoughts and draw, as well as motivational quotes intended to inspire.

During the tour, Flynn emphasized that care would be customized to meet individual patient needs. Additionally, posters detailing patient expectations line the hallways, and nurses incentivize positive behavior with tickets that can be exchanged for rewards. Dr. John Mauch, the inpatient psychiatry director, noted that this new facility enhances the level of care available in Spartanburg, allowing for better stabilization of patients who may require more extensive treatment. He mentioned ongoing partnerships with local services to ensure continuity of care for patients after stabilization.
