
Researchers at the University of Missouri have discovered that a simple adjustment to shift scheduling can enhance the health and well-being of physicians working overnight shifts.

Matthew Robinson, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the School of Medicine, led a study focusing on emergency medicine physicians who typically rotate between night shifts. Instead of their usual hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., the physicians worked from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. The earlier schedule resulted in significant improvements in sleep quality and reductions in inflammation-related biomarkers.
The modification allowed physicians to align their sleep patterns more closely with natural circadian rhythms. Previous studies indicated that disruptions to these internal clocks are linked to increased risks of heart disease, diabetes, and burnout. Robinson intended to assess whether a modest scheduling change could positively impact the health of night-shift physicians in demanding hospital settings.
Robinson noted the health implications of night-shift work: “Research shows that night-shift workers are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer, and early mortality. This disruption to our circadian rhythm is crucial from a wellness perspective.” He believes that demonstrating health improvements from adjusted scheduling could lead to broader implementation across healthcare and other industries employing night shifts.
In the study, Robinson measured inflammation markers such as white blood cell and platelet counts both before and after the shift change. Following the new schedule, both markers exhibited reductions, indicating decreased inflammation linked to chronic health issues. Additionally, participants wore Fitbit devices to monitor their sleep patterns, which showed more restorative sleep and an overall sense of feeling refreshed.
Physicians reported enhancements in their quality of life due to the changes. Robinson emphasized the benefits for social engagement: “Changing the schedule allowed them more daytime wakefulness, providing time for family and social interactions, which is essential for a fulfilling life.” The study group decided to maintain the new schedule upon completion of the experiment.
Robinson plans to conduct larger studies to explore whether these health benefits could also apply to nurses and other healthcare employees working overnight.
