The research indicates that individuals with vitamin D levels below 15 nmol/L are at a significantly higher risk for conditions such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Abi Bournot, the study's lead author, noted that the antibacterial and antiviral properties of vitamin D are believed to contribute to a lowered risk of respiratory tract infections. She emphasized that the study provides concrete data supporting this theory.
Despite its benefits, many individuals do not reach the government-recommended intake of 10 micrograms of vitamin D per day. The study drew on NHS data from 36,258 participants, revealing that for every 10 nmol/L increase in vitamin D levels, the rate of hospital admissions for respiratory infections decreased by 4%.
