Watson was arrested near Woodward Avenue and State Street and is facing one count of premeditated first-degree murder. He was arraigned on Wednesday afternoon. According to a mental health petition filed in Wayne County probate court on July 3, 2026, a nurse observed Watson acting psychotic and needing hospitalization.
Prior to his court order, he had been brought to a hospital by police after causing a disturbance at a coffee shop, displaying signs of confusion and making nonsensical statements. On July 13, 2026, a judge granted an order for him to receive mental health treatment not exceeding 180 days at Havenwyck Hospital in Auburn Hills.
Medical professionals noted that Watson exhibited acute psychosis and was unable to understand his mental state, making it difficult for him to communicate effectively.
At a hearing on the day of the order, staff from Havenwyck requested to waive Watson's appearance, citing concerns about the safety of transport. In the community where Watson previously lived, residents reported frequent ambulance visits to his boarding house, indicating potential ongoing mental health struggles. Watson has a criminal history, having pleaded guilty in 2010 to criminal sexual conduct and in 2016 to misdemeanor assault.
Despite his past offenses, he is not listed on Michigan’s public sex offender registry.
