A study involving more than 5,500 adults aged 50 and older has identified a concerning health risk associated with the combination of abdominal obesity and vitamin D deficiency. Participants exhibiting both conditions faced a 123% higher risk of mortality compared to those without either issue.

Published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, the research highlights that while each condition independently correlates with increased risks of death, their coexistence significantly heightens this risk. Tiago Silva Alexandre, a professor at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) in Brazil and the study's coordinator, noted the critical nature of monitoring vitamin D levels alongside managing abdominal fat to mitigate the risk of premature death, particularly for individuals over the age of 50.

Conducted in partnership with University College London (UCL), the study tracked participants for six years as part of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). It revealed that vitamin D deficiency, defined as levels below 30 nmol/L, poses a greater risk of death than abdominal obesity on its own. Abdominal obesity was defined as a waist circumference exceeding 102 centimeters for men and 88 centimeters for women. Individuals with abdominal obesity alone exhibited a 47% elevated mortality risk, while vitamin D deficiency alone was linked to an up to 91% increased risk. However, the risk of death was more than double when both conditions were present.

Alexandre explained that abdominal fat may sequester vitamin D, storing it in fat cells instead of allowing it to circulate freely in the bloodstream for essential bodily functions. This scenario creates a detrimental cycle where obesity diminishes available vitamin D, impairing immune function and exacerbating chronic inflammation associated with excess fat. Additionally, individuals with obesity often exhibit reduced activity of enzymes necessary for vitamin D metabolism, further curtailing its availability for the body.

The findings are particularly significant as aging is generally associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, known as inflammaging. Alexandre pointed out that under optimal conditions, vitamin D functions as a regulator of the immune system. Low levels coupled with excess abdominal fat foster an environment conducive to cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, as well as muscle atrophy.

These insights are part of ongoing research aimed at understanding the broader implications of vitamin D on health during aging. Previous studies by the same research group have suggested that vitamin D deficiency can lead to decreased physical strength and increased dependence in daily activities, as well as a heightened risk of cognitive decline. Vitamin D is essential for regulating several critical physiological functions, including blood pressure, heart rate, and immune response, underscoring the importance of its adequate levels in maintaining overall health.
