The Bell Seal certifies employers committed to fostering mentally healthy workplaces. Sanford Health passed a comprehensive evaluation assessing its policies and practices in four key areas: workplace culture, benefits, compliance, and wellness programs. It stands as the only organization in North Dakota and South Dakota to earn the 2026 Bell Seal certification.

Ashley Wenger, senior vice president of employee experience, education, and workforce relations at Sanford Health, emphasized the organization’s commitment, stating that employees can expect genuine care for their well-being. She noted the interplay between home and work well-being, highlighting the diverse resources available to employees and their families to navigate challenges.

Sanford Health has actively addressed workplace stress and burnout by implementing various initiatives, including resiliency groups, leader training programs, a clinician assistance program, counseling services, and a wellness council. The organization also maintains a comprehensive library of mental health resources to support staff in both their personal and professional lives.

As a majority of the workforce consists of front-line staff, Sanford Health has introduced regular departmental huddles—daily and weekly—to facilitate communication and ensure employees are aware of the available well-being resources. Leadership routinely reviews data from employee assistance programs and surveys to refine and enhance mental health offerings.

Mental Health America, a prominent nonprofit focused on mental health promotion and illness prevention, has been researching workplace mental health for decades. The Bell Seal was introduced in 2019 to acknowledge organizations prioritizing employee well-being.
