The document addresses three main areas: food provision within schools, nutritional standards for foods and beverages offered or sold at educational institutions, and interventions designed to encourage healthier choices among students. The recommendations focus on increasing the availability and consumption of nutritious foods and drinks while decreasing the presence of unhealthy options.
It stresses that all foods and beverages in schools should be safe and promote healthy diets, aligning with children’s rights and national public health objectives. Schools are key environments where children spend considerable time, making them pivotal in shaping lifelong dietary habits and addressing health disparities.
Efforts to create healthier food environments in schools should be part of broader initiatives aimed at transforming food systems and ensuring healthy food options for everyone. This includes implementing marketing restrictions, fiscal policies to encourage healthier diets, and nutrition labeling.
A webinar will provide insights into the WHO recommendations and share experiences from countries that have enacted policies to foster healthier school food environments.
