
A recent study has identified a connection between low vitamin D levels and increased risk of hospitalization for respiratory infections, including bronchitis and pneumonia. Participants with vitamin D levels of 15 nmol/L or less were categorized as severely deficient. The study found that this group had a 33% higher risk of hospitalization for respiratory infections compared to those with levels of 75 nmol/L or higher. Moreover, for every 10 nmol/L increase in vitamin D levels, the hospitalization rate fell by 4%.
Abi Bournot, a PhD research fellow at the University of Surrey, highlighted the potential of vitamin D as a modifiable risk factor due to its significant role in immune function. With an estimated 1 billion people worldwide affected by vitamin D deficiency, she emphasized the need for greater public health awareness regarding maintaining adequate levels.
Fady Youssef, a pulmonologist at MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center, noted that the findings confirm existing knowledge of the association between low vitamin D levels and various health conditions. While the study does not establish causation, Youssef acknowledged the role of vitamin D in immune regulation.
Experts recommend vitamin D supplementation, particularly during winter months, to help mitigate the risk of serious respiratory infections. This is especially crucial for older individuals and certain ethnic minority groups in the U.K. who are more vulnerable to vitamin D deficiency.
Monique Richard, a registered dietitian, advised individuals to assess their vitamin D status with healthcare professionals, especially those at higher risk, such as older adults, individuals with darker skin, and those in northern regions with limited sun exposure. She suggested consuming vitamin D-rich foods, such as fatty fish, cod liver oil, and fortified products, while considering supplements if necessary.
Richard emphasized that maintaining immune health requires a holistic approach, combining various nutrients, quality sleep, balanced nutrition, stress management, and physical activity. The study underscores that while vitamin D deficiency is a preventable risk factor, it does not directly prevent infections.
