The study, published in Sleep Medicine, demonstrated that better sleep correlates with improved functional capacity, fewer behavioral problems, and enhanced mental and physical quality of life. Notably, at the study's outset, younger participants and those with more CAG repeats tended to sleep better, suggesting a complex relationship between sleep quality and the disease’s progression.
One significant finding was the relationship between muscle strength and sleep quality. Participants with lower handgrip strength experienced worse sleep quality, indicating a potential bi-directional link. Disrupted sleep may affect hormone levels vital for muscle health, while muscle loss could also negatively impact sleep.
