
A recent survey by researchers from the University of Parma and Cranfield University has found that mycotoxins, toxic compounds produced by fungi, are present in all 212 plant-based meat alternatives (PMBAs) and plant-based beverages (PBBs) sampled from UK stores. The analyzed items included a variety of products commonly available to UK consumers, such as vegan sausages, vegetarian chicken pieces, and various plant-based milks like oat, almond, and soy.
Mycotoxins often appear in plant-based foods due to the potential for mold exposure during the growth and storage of ingredients such as grains, legumes, and seeds. Fortunately, the levels of mycotoxins detected in these UK products were below the recommended guidelines set by the EU, indicating the high-quality standards upheld by the UK food industry.
While the individual consumption of these products may not pose immediate health risks, researchers warn about the cumulative effects of long-term exposure. Previous studies suggest that repeated exposure to small quantities of mycotoxins can accumulate over time, potentially leading to health issues. Severe exposure has been linked to liver and kidney damage, immune system suppression, and cancer risk.
Andrea Patriarca, a Senior Lecturer in Mycology at Cranfield University, emphasized the need for better monitoring of mycotoxin levels, especially as new foods enter the marketplace without established regulations. She noted that the current collaboration aims to create effective mycotoxin management practices within food safety standards.
This research contributes important data for assessing dietary exposure and reinforcing consumer education, particularly for those with varying dietary habits.
