The research utilized data from the UK Biobank and employed machine learning to develop 23 aging clocks for 17 organs. These clocks showed that organs age at different rates and have varying sensitivities to sleep patterns. Short sleep, defined as less than 6 hours per night, has been correlated with mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, as well as physical conditions including obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and heart arrhythmias. Conversely, long sleep, characterized as more than 8 hours per night, is linked to similar health problems and may serve as a marker for poorer overall health.
Chronic diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and digestive disorders were also associated with both short and long sleep durations. The study highlighted that sleep not only affects the brain but also has implications for bodily health, reinforcing the interconnectedness of the brain-body network.
Research findings suggest that while the relationship between sleep and biological aging does not establish causation, both inadequate and excessive sleep could be indicators of declining health. Junhao Wen, the study leader and an assistant professor of radiology at Columbia University, emphasized the importance of sleep for organ health across the body.
The study further explored the relationship between sleep and late-life depression, positing that short sleep could directly affect depression-related health burdens, while long sleep may influence it through specific biological pathways involving fat tissue. The study was published in the journal Nature on May 13.
