Food technology company Edonia has successfully raised €15 million in funding. As consumer expectations rise, the food market is transitioning from merely providing meat alternatives to offering products that are not only high in protein and affordable but also minimally processed and palatable.

Edonia aims to address these needs with a novel food source derived from microalgae, which seeks to surpass the traditional approach of replicating animal products. The company's primary offering, Edo, is a microalgae-based ingredient that boasts high protein content while remaining adaptable for the food processing and service industries, all with a simplified ingredient list.
Edo is created from spirulina, serving as a substitute for conventional protein sources such as meat, cheese, and fish, while enhancing the nutritional profile of various foods. Edonia has developed a proprietary patented process called Edonization in partnership with AgroParisTech. This process transforms the traditionally unappealing spirulina powder into a flavorful, tender grain with a carbon footprint up to 27 times lower than that of meat.
The company plans to industrialize its technology, having begun this process in 2024 with the rollout of a functional pilot plant. Edonia is transitioning from laboratory development to full production, having established its own supply chain and secured initial orders from partners like Aliive and Newrest, a multinational company operating in 50 countries.
With the new €15 million funding from SWEN Blue Ocean 2, Asterion Ventures, and EIT Food, along with non-dilutive support from Bpifrance and bank loans, Edonia intends to enhance its industrial capabilities. Plans include opening a dedicated facility in collaboration with a trusted partner in France and expanding its B2B foodservice sales in Europe, Japan, and the United States.
In addition to this funding, Edonia has amassed €30 million in pre-orders through contracts with leading industry players. Co-founder Hugo Valentin stated, "We've proven that a whole food protein can outperform the animal on nutrition and compete on price, at real volume, with real clients. This funding gives us the resources to turn our promise into verified proof."
Julie Peyrache, Investment Director at SWEN Blue Ocean 2, expressed satisfaction with supporting Edonia, noting that the innovation meets growing consumer demands for nutritious, tasty, and environmentally friendly food options.
