The rise of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has become a significant public health concern globally, and Kuwait is no exception. A cross-sectional study involving 159 participants (average age 8.58 years, with 59.1% male) utilized the SNAP-IV Parent Rating Scale and a UPF consumption questionnaire based on the NOVA classification system. The analysis found a statistically significant positive correlation between UPF consumption and ADHD symptom severity (ρ = 0.576, p < 0.001). Hyperactivity correlated most strongly with UPF intake, particularly among boys, while inattention was more prominent among girls.

The study indicates that higher UPF consumption, often rich in synthetic ingredients, is associated with exacerbated ADHD symptoms in children. The results suggest an urgent need for public health policies to regulate UPF consumption, especially among children, and calls for targeted interventions to educate parents on healthier dietary options.

Globally, the prevalence of ADHD is estimated at 7.2%, with the Arab Gulf region reporting 5.9%. While the causes of ADHD remain somewhat unclear, nutrition is increasingly acknowledged as a modifiable factor affecting both the etiology and management of the disorder. Evidence points to certain dietary patterns, such as high consumption of sugars and additives common in UPFs, potentially exacerbating behavioral problems.

In this study, the SNAP-IV Parent Rating Scale was used to assess behavior, focusing on three domains: inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, and oppositional defiant behavior. The findings suggest that UPF intake impinges on cognitive functioning and behavioral regulation, raising concerns about the impact of these foods on child development.

Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to explore the directionality of these associations, as well as investigate the role of nutrition in the context of ADHD management. The results underscore the importance of addressing dietary health to mitigate behavioral issues, ultimately improving the quality of life for children in Kuwait.
