PHOENIX — Matthew Ammel, the former bodyguard of ex-Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema, has spoken out following allegations against him involving a mental health crisis and significant property damage to her home. Ammel, who is facing felony charges for allegedly breaking into Sinema's residence and damaging over $200,000 in property, was arrested on September 18 after an incident that occurred on August 30.

In an email to Arizona’s Family, Ammel, 39, described experiencing a mental breakdown due to stress. He provided videos that he claims show him and others from his 2007 military deployment administering first aid, which he wanted Sinema to share on social media.
Maricopa County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to investigate criminal damage at Sinema's Cave Creek home after she reported that Ammel had vandalized her property while she was away. According to court documents, Ammel demanded that Sinema post a video on her account, threatening to damage her belongings if she refused. He allegedly removed 22 paintings from the walls and threw them into her swimming pool. One additional painting was found spray-painted outside.
The total value of the damaged paintings was estimated at $123,015, contributing to a total damage assessment exceeding $200,000. Sinema presented text messages, video evidence, and surveillance footage to authorities, which corroborated the claims against Ammel.
Ammel was taken into custody following a petition for an involuntary psychiatric evaluation, having reportedly been picked up from a behavioral health center. Dr. John Delatorre, a forensic psychologist who reviewed the case, noted that Ammel's behavior might indicate PTSD, common among individuals with military backgrounds. He emphasized the need for close monitoring, warning that violent tendencies could escalate if Ammel continues to feel unheard.
Ammel's initial court appearance did not result in a bond being set, but he has since been released with an electronic monitor and is scheduled to return to court next week.
