Monash University has introduced a new mobile app named SleepSync, designed to assist shift workers in managing their sleep cycles and mitigating health risks associated with irregular work hours. Unlike other sleep apps, SleepSync specifically caters to shift workers by integrating their professional and personal schedules, sleep patterns, and other individual variables.

Users of SleepSync can input their work and personal calendars along with daily logs of their sleep, wake times, and moods. The app generates personalized suggestions for optimal sleep times, focusing on improving sleep hygiene, which is essential for achieving restorative sleep.

According to Dr. Jade Murray, a researcher at Monash, the app’s recommendations align with users' biological clocks and past sleep history, making it easier for them to fall asleep. Dr. Tracey Sletten, another co-author of the study, emphasized the need for evidence-based strategies to help shift workers optimize their sleep, taking into account the unique biological and work patterns of each individual.

The app was tested on 27 hospital shift workers across intensive care and emergency departments over a two-week period. Results showed that 70% of participants found it easier to fall asleep when following the app's advice, with over 80% reporting improved sleep quality and an average gain of 29 minutes of sleep per night. Additional findings revealed that 67% felt influenced by the app, 85% used it for an adequate duration, and 82% found it easily integrated into their routines. Users also reported better moods, enhanced sleep hygiene, reduced insomnia severity, and fewer sleep-related daytime impairments.

Shift work sleep disorder (SWSD) affects about 20% of full-time workers in the U.S. and complicates managing different sleep-wake schedules, leading to a range of health issues including mood problems and increased risk of chronic conditions.

Future potential for SleepSync may include integration with wearable devices. A 2022 review highlighted the demand among shift workers for innovative tools to manage their sleep. Current sleep apps like Sleepio, Timeshifter, and Arcascope are available, but SleepSync aims to offer a personalized approach.

SleepSync will be released on both Apple and Android platforms, with ongoing development to ensure its readiness for users. Organizations may also have the opportunity to provide the app to their employees working shifts.
