Junhao Wen, an assistant professor of radiology at the university, noted that previous studies had already established a connection between sleep and aging, as well as brain health. He emphasized that the current research expands on this, showing associations between sleep duration and accelerated aging across multiple organs.

The analysis utilized data from 500,000 participants in the long-term U.K. Biobank study, employing machine learning techniques to identify how different organs may age at varying rates. Researchers developed what they referred to as "aging clocks" to assess whether a person's organ systems are functioning older than their chronological age. The results indicated that both too little sleep (less than six hours) and too much sleep (more than eight hours) were correlated with accelerated organ aging.

Long or short sleep duration appeared to be linked to multiple chronic health conditions, including obesity, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Moreover, the study identified associations between sleep duration and respiratory issues, digestive disorders, late-life depression, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Marie-Pierre St-Onge, a professor at Columbia University not involved in the study, noted that women generally seem to benefit from slightly longer sleep, approximately 15 to 20 minutes more than men, aligning with self-reported sleep data. Wen cautioned that while these findings are significant, they should not be taken as prescriptive, as individual sleep needs can vary.
