The event, named Closet for a Cause, aims to raise $500 for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), which provides free mental health education, support groups, and advocacy. Jillian Harris, secretary of NAMI Northeast Kansas, noted the community's generosity, mentioning that many donated items were still new.
This marks the second consecutive year that Seven Stories has partnered with NAMI for the event, coinciding with Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Harris highlighted the significant need for mental health resources in Wyandotte County, stating that there are fewer crisis responders and resources available in that area.
Harris expressed hope that participants not only leave with new clothing but also with increased awareness about mental health issues. She emphasized the importance of normalizing discussions around this heavy topic.
Amber Kuykendall, a board member of NAMI, remarked on the urgent need for events like this, noting that access to mental health services is becoming increasingly limited, particularly for those facing financial difficulties. She called for a shift towards preventive measures in mental health care, advocating for resources to act before crises escalate.
