CLIVE, IOWA (September 28, 2026) — Iowa Pork Producers are celebrating Porktober this October by emphasizing the nutritional value of pork, particularly its protein content. With the trend of "protein-maxxing" among consumers, pork offers a flavorful and affordable way to increase protein intake, thanks to the efforts of farm families and workers who raise the animals responsibly.

A single three-ounce serving of pork provides an average of 23 grams of protein, contributing to the recommended daily intake of at least 100 grams of protein for most adults, according to updated federal Dietary Guidelines. Lean cuts such as pork tenderloin are recognized with the American Heart Association's Heart-Check mark, indicating they contain less than five grams of fat, two grams of saturated fat, and 480 milligrams or less of sodium per serving.

The protein content per three-ounce serving includes:

- Pork Loin: 23 grams

- Pork Sirloin Roast: 26 grams

- Pork Tenderloin: 22 grams (leaner than skinless chicken breast)

Porktober celebrates not just the nutritional aspects of pork, but also the care put into raising the pigs and the commitment of the Iowa farm families and workers to sustainable practices.

To assist home cooks in utilizing the protein benefits of pork, the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) is featuring three recipes this season:

- Street Corn Pork Chops: Juicy, grilled pork chops topped with a creamy corn salad, providing 46 grams of protein per serving.

- Sausage Gnocchi: A hearty, one-pan meal of savory pork sausage and gnocchi, offering 32 grams of protein per serving.

- Pork Tenderloin Pimento Sandwich: A delicious sandwich featuring tender pork tenderloin and creamy pimento cheese, containing 37 grams of protein per serving.

IPPA President Dean Frazer stated, "Pork is one of the easiest ways for families to get more protein on the table without sacrificing flavor. Whether it's a weeknight sausage gnocchi or grilled pork chops with friends, every recipe this Porktober is built around real nutrition families can feel good about."
