A recent study by PepsiCo India, conducted with Euromonitor International and the Indian Institute of Millet Research, reveals significant gaps in nutritional intake among urban Indian consumers. The research, titled ‘The State of Protein & Fibre in Urban India’, surveyed 1,250 individuals aged 18 to 50 across cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Kochi.

Findings indicate that a majority of respondents are not meeting daily nutritional requirements. Specifically, 70% consume less than the recommended 41 grams of protein daily, and 61% fail to meet their fiber intake. While 74% of consumers claim awareness of their protein needs, 56% lack accurate knowledge of their actual requirements.

The study also uncovered a substantial knowledge gap regarding fiber; 59% believe they are informed about their fiber needs, yet 89% are misinformed, with only 11% accurately identifying the recommended intake levels. The deficits in fiber consumption are pronounced, particularly among Gen X, where the shortfall rises to 65%.

Barriers to improving protein and fiber consumption are substantial. Approximately 60% of participants cite high costs as a deterrent to protein intake, while 57% point to the lack of convenient protein-focused food options. The situation is more critical for fiber, with 69% reporting insufficient accessible options, and even higher percentages in cities like Kochi (74%), Kolkata (72%), and Mumbai (71%).

At the study's launch, Dr. Ankita Marwaha from PepsiCo India emphasized the importance of translating nutritional knowledge into practical choices. She noted that while awareness is increasing, it must be coupled with actionable insights that help consumers make healthier dietary decisions.

Dilip Radhakrishna of Euromonitor International remarked on the disparity between consumer interests in protein and fiber and their understanding of daily needs. He highlighted a need for improved nutrition communication that clarifies how daily food choices can help meet nutritional requirements.

PepsiCo India aims to address these challenges by fostering deeper insights into consumer needs and advocating for more accessible and practical nutrition solutions.
