The research involved 197 adults newly diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS and a control group of 200 adults without neurological conditions. Each participant completed questionnaires detailing their dietary habits, which allowed researchers to calculate a Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) and a Micronutrient Adequacy Ratio (MAR).
The MDS assessed how closely individuals' diets resembled the Mediterranean model, known for its focus on lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and olive oil, while limiting processed foods and animal fats. The MAR evaluated whether participants were getting sufficient vitamins and minerals essential for health.
Participants were categorized into three groups based on their MDS and MAR scores. After accounting for age and smoking status, the analysis revealed that those in the highest MDS group had a 47 percent reduced risk of MS compared to those in the lowest group. Furthermore, individuals in the highest MAR group exhibited a 75 percent lower risk of MS than their counterparts with the lowest scores.
The authors of the study stated that the results suggest a potential relationship between higher MDS and MAR and a reduced risk of MS, advocating for public health initiatives that promote Mediterranean dietary patterns and adequate micronutrient intake, particularly for populations at increased risk for MS. They also proposed that integrating dietary counseling into MS management could enhance current treatment approaches.
However, the researchers cautioned that their findings do not prove that dietary changes can prevent MS. The study's limitations, including its focus on participants in Iran, suggest that cultural differences in dietary habits may affect the broader applicability of the results.
