Ottumwa Regional Health Center (ORHC) in Ottumwa, Iowa, has introduced an Adult Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) aimed at individuals aged 18 and older who require more support than weekly counseling but do not necessitate hospitalization. Participants in the program will attend three-hour sessions three days a week, with each group limited to 10 individuals and facilitated by a mental health provider.

Christina Smith, ORHC’s Intensive Outpatient Unit Manager, stated that the program utilizes dialectical behavior therapy to equip participants with coping skills for various mental health challenges and life situations, incorporating both group therapy and activities. "It is supposed to be a comforting space that people want to come into and feel at ease in — and to sit down and have a group conversation," Smith said.
The IOP serves as both a preventative measure to avert full hospitalization and a supportive transition for individuals moving out of hospitalization, easing the adjustment process. This program is now accepting patients, and individuals interested in enrolling can contact ORHC at 641-683-6860 without needing a doctor’s referral.
An open house will take place on Wednesday, October 21, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the fourth floor of ORHC for anyone seeking more information about the program.
