After 12 weeks, the true diet group exhibited significant changes in both β-diversity and the Simpson index (α-diversity) of gut microbiota compared to the sham group. Specifically, Bacteroidetes levels decreased while those of Firmicutes, Bifidobacterium, and Butyricicoccus increased in the true diet group. Zonulin levels also decreased more substantially in this group, alongside observed improvements in migraine symptoms and related comorbidities.
The patients' baseline and post-intervention assessments involved various questionnaires, including the Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), which collectively indicated a correlation between dietary changes and reduced migraine frequency. Additionally, the study indicated that alterations in gut microbiota were statistically linked with changes in IL-6, CGRP, and zonulin concentrations.
The study was registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (identifier ChiCTR2000039278) and highlights the potential impact of dietary modifications on migraine management through microbiota alterations and related biological markers. While the findings offer valuable insights into the dietary management of migraines, further exploration with larger sample sizes is suggested to substantiate these results.
