
A recent study by researchers at Florida International University (FIU) has identified a connection between brain structure, sleep quality, and anxiety in children aged 10 to 13 years. Published in *Scientific Reports*, the research highlights that while a larger pineal gland is often associated with better sleep, for preteens experiencing high anxiety, it may lead to worse sleep quality.

The study, led by psychology professor Aaron Mattfeld and FIU alumnus Franco Fuertes, utilized high-resolution MRI scans and sleep lab monitoring to investigate the brains of preteens. The researchers found that between 50 to 60% of participants had non-functional pineal cysts—fluid-filled structures that do not produce hormones—yet these cysts did not correlate with the children’s anxiety levels. When analyzing the melatonin-producing tissue of the pineal gland, the researchers uncovered an unexpected result: a larger gland indeed correlated with longer time taken to fall asleep and less efficient sleep in highly anxious children, contrary to initial predictions.
"If your anxiety is elevated and you have a larger pineal gland, you're going to have worse sleep outcomes than if you have high anxiety with a small pineal gland," stated Mattfeld regarding the findings. Although the underlying reasons for this are still being investigated, the team suggests that chronic stress might alter the pineal gland’s cellular structure or affect how the brain processes sleep signals.
The choice to focus on children aged 10 to 13 is significant, as this period often precedes a rise in internalizing disorders like social phobia and generalized anxiety. This age range also marks substantial structural changes in the brain, influenced by increasing hormone levels that affect sleep cycles. Preteens naturally experience shifts in their internal clocks, leading to tendencies to stay up later, which contradicts current school start times.
The research team, backed by federal funding, is currently tracking 200 children as they transition from middle school to late adolescence, seeking to determine if early sleep issues might lead to psychiatric conditions. They plan to pursue additional funding to extend their study into participants' 20s, while developing interventions for children facing sleep challenges.
Mattfeld and Fuertes hope their findings encourage greater attention from pediatricians on the importance of sleep in children's health. They stress the need for consistent sleep schedules and a conducive sleep environment, recommending behavioral therapy over over-the-counter sleep aids. "We need to help kids find that 'Goldilocks' amount of sleep," Mattfeld explained, noting the crucial biological processes that occur during rest.
