SAMHSA Allocates $42.3 Million for 'Treatment First' Addiction Programs

On September 18, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced it has awarded $42.3 million in grants to states and territories. These funds are intended to support addiction programs under the newly implemented "Treatment First" framework, which emphasizes evidence-based treatment to aid in sustained recovery. This approach marks a shift from the previous "Housing First" model, which concentrated on providing connections to permanent supportive housing.

Of the total funding, $17.3 million is designated for Community Mental Health Services Block Grant recipients. This portion will be used for technical assistance, training, policy development, and cross-system coordination. The remaining $25 million will be allocated to Substance Use Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Services Block Grant recipients, aiming to expand the availability of recovery residences across the nation.
